Tuskegee University implements new security measures after mass shootings in November

In response to a mass shooting that took place on campus in November 2024, Tuskegee University announced the completion of several security upgrades that aim to improve the security of the campus and to control access to the university site.

According to an explanation of the university, new exclusive input weapons were installed at three main points of view: Brimmer Gate, Lincoln Gate and Franklin Road Gate. These changes are a shift in campus policy, since the university is no longer accessible to the public without the correct approval. Visitors must now request temporary passes online and enter them via the Lincoln Gate.

University President Dr. Mark A. Brown emphasized that the measures are part of a wider effort to ensure the safety of the students.

“Control of access to the campus is only one step in our full plan,” he said.

With the support of Alabama Power, lighting improvements were made on previously dark areas, including the Baseballfeld, parking spaces and tennis courts. The temporary lighting was installed immediately after the incident, with further permanent upgrades planned.

Campus Security reported that the mass shootings took place on campus during an unsuitable event. The attack led to the death of 18-year-old La'tavion Johnson and injuries from 16 others. The authorities arrested the 25 -year -old Jaquez Myrick at the scene; He later said guilty of firearms. Another suspect, Jeremiah Williams, 20, was charged with the possession of a machine rifle, but denies that he had fired his weapon.

In addition to security upgrades, Tuskegee University has implemented new guidelines in which the students have to wear ID cards at any time and visitors who visibly issue their badges during your stay. After the shootout, the university also dismissed its former security chief and appointed a new security manager to monitor further improvements.
