Under the new leadership, Cu Buffs Buffs Edge Rushers, who want to build on success in 2024

When reconstruction of the defense for 2025, Colorado is looking for new managers.

The defense coordinator Robert Livingston already has an eye on one in the eye.

Walker, whose father played art from 1986 to 89 at the CU, is one of the leaders of a talented group of Edge-Rushern who come back in 2025.

It is a group that has an experienced, yet new coach in George Helow. After Vincent Dancy left Mississippi for the state this winter, Helow was promoted to train the defense of the Buffs.

“I am only happy and very blessed to be here and have the opportunity,” said Helow, who spent last season as a defensive analyst for the buffs.

Helow's career included Stops in Colorado State, Florida State, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan and Alabama. This year at the CU he takes over a group of Edge -Rushers that could be the best in the Big 12.

Cu led the Big 12 in Sacks last season with 39 and returned several important players from this group, including Walker. The Cherry Creek High School graduate had 4.5 sacks and 6.5 duels for the loss last season.

Taje McCoy (four sacks), Keaten Wade (four sacks) and Samuel Okunlola (three sacks) also return.

“We want to be quick, we want to be physical,” said Helow. “We want to be a dominant front. We want to stop the run. We want to be able to bring the Big 12 back into bags and build on it as last year. We want to play with toughness. We want to have great passion, energy and effort.

“On something that we really focus on, and this starts with our head leader coach Prime (head coach Deion Sanders) is that we turn and burn, sprint to the ball, play with good pad level, create a good separation and locking up, make people back.”

Helow agreed that Walker could be one of the group leaders, and at the same time mentioned McCoy and entered his third year with the buffs as a possible leader.

Okunlola and Wade are traveling with injuries this spring, but the group was strengthened by the youthful energy of Alex McPherson and London Merritt, a couple of newcomers who arrived in January.

“We just want to grow as a unit and just get better every day and develop this boys as the best version of themselves as men and football players,” said Helow. “These are the boys at the moment, and as a group we definitely have to get healthy and just get better for the boys who practice out there, and follow a day after a time approach.”

Although the buffs lost the sack guide BJ Green (7.5 sacks last year) against the end, Helow said that he was excited about what the group did in 2024.

“Last year there were many positive things that the Front did, many good coaches in this room, and we just want to build on it,” he said. “It is more suitable one day after the other and this mentality and the little one.

“We have a great group and I am very happy and look forward to working with you all the spring.”

Last year Cu's Front Seven – Edge Rushers and Linemen – were trained by a dynamic trio by Dancy, Damione Lewis and Hall of Famer Warren Sapp. Dancy and Lewis (Miami) have now disappeared, but Helow said that he was trying to work with Sapp and the newly set defensive trainer Domata Peko.

“These two (PEKO and SAPP), together in the league for 28 years,” said Helow. “I mean, we will do things together, work as a group, as a unit, work together as a defense and simply be the best version that we can be day after day.

“But it is an honor and a big blessing to work with these boys. What an opportunity. “
