Urbana you get 45 years in 2023 shooting | Court-Police-Fire

Urbana – When he looked at the man who shot him six times, Maurice Harris had a question: “Was it worth it?”

“What did you get from it? Did one of your children get something? Did some family members get something? “Harris asked Antwon Bush, 52, from Urbana. “What did you get out of it? Nothing but time in prison. “

Harris testified on Tuesday at a court hearing for Bush, which was found guilty for attempted murder in 2024 due to the 2023 shootout.

In the trial, the deputy prosecutor Chris McCallum proved evidence of which he said that Bush's wish to shoot Harris was previously involved in a relationship with and Bush because of jealousy about a woman who was Harris.

The investigators found a video from Bush, which apparently showed a firearm built in his covenant, even though he and the public defender Janie Miller claim that it was not a real weapon.

In a recorded call from Bush from prison, he can hear him telling a woman that he should get rid of a “helicopter”.

When the police came to the shootout and found Harris, he accused Bush, and this certificate remained consistent during the process.

Harris had survived six point-blank-caliber shots in what Champaign County judge Matthew Lee called “basically a shootout” in the direction of execution.

McCallum asked for a 60-year imprisonment: “10 years for each time Mr. Harris was shot by the defendant”, while Miller asked for at least 31 years of age, which would be a life sentence in Bush's age.

Lee went between the two with a 45-year prison sentence.

“It is an important prison sentence, Mr. Bush, who is intended to be a very old man at that time, and that means protecting our community,” said Lee.

He also said that he wanted to impose a punishment that would make it clear that “we could not tolerate firearms or gun violence in our community”.

When Harris spoke, he demanded that Bush to be detained for a long time, but said that he didn't hated him.

“I can't hate you because my God is very powerful,” said Harris. “I have to forgive you with all my heart, but your path is your way and you now have to pay for what you have done to me.”

He claimed that Bush had planned against him for years and he did not deserve to be free.

“Sad to say that they are unable to be with adults, children and family members. Friends or enemies, nobody is safe, ”said Harris.

Bush spoke in his own name during the hearing and again claimed that he was not the shooter.

“I actually feel bad for what happened to Maurice Harris, but it wasn't my actions,” he said. “I had nothing against this man, I had no reason to shoot this man.”

Harris had to join the hearing about zoom because he no longer lives in the area; Bush claimed that he had moved away because the “real” shooter was still out there.

Ultimately, Lee said that Bush's arguments for his decision in the conviction were irrelevant because a jury had already made a decision on this matter.

“I judge them as if they had shot Mr. Harris and that's the only thing I can do,” said Lee. “Just because they said that they didn't do it is in no way evidence of the reduction.”
