The water supply for some southern parts of the city was hit on Saturday due to a leak in the pipeline, the water from the Veeranam tank near Kelambakkam was supplied.

The residents said they had not received waterwater on Saturday. Cr Balaji from Mandaveli said that the MRC Nagar sales station usually supplied drinking water in areas such as Mylapore and Mandaveli. The water supply was regularly disturbed for various reasons, in particular due to connection work for the Metro -Rail projects from Chennai. Such sudden leaks in the pipeline or repairs in the network only contribute to the suffering of the residents, he added.

The overall quantum of the water supply of the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) was also hit on Saturday. It was reduced to almost 908 million liters per day (MLD) compared to almost 1,032 mLD on Friday. It has been gradually reduced since February 27th. This summer, the CMWSSB wants to depend mainly on reservoirs from reservoirs to manage the city's water requirements.

Drawal suspended

Water extract from the Veeranam tank was hung on Saturday when the leak was observed in the massive pipeline of 1,875 mm diameter on the Vandalur Kelambakkam main road in Pudhupakkam. This pipeline is linked to the Nemmeli relaxation system to enable the switch to desalinated water during drought.

CMWSSB officials said that the water supply would be restored on Sunday as soon as the repairs to the Veeranam gear pipeline were completed.

The city's water supply was temporarily reduced to enable the networking of pipeline, which the Chennai Metro Rail Limited carried out in various parts of the city. The water pressure was also reduced in some areas to avoid damage to the water supply network due to ongoing work.

With the reservoirs in Chembarambakam, Poondi and Red Hills with almost 90% of their total capacity, the water authority plans to increase the Drawal from the waterbooks in order to meet the needs of the city and to reduce production in the Nemmeli relaxation systems this summer. This will also prepare the reservoirs for the Krishna water supply from Andhra Pradesh later this year. The daily water supply would be controlled up to 1,050 mLD in a few days after completing the current work, the officials added.
