Waupun -Gasleck leads to evacuation in the city center on Friday evening


A total of 20 people and 20 properties were affected.

Waupun – Several buildings in downtown Waupun were evacuated on Friday evening.

The evacuations occurred according to firefighters and reacted to the report on a gas smell at 9:19 p.m. in the 300 block of the East Main Street, and discovered a gas line and the measuring device on the floor, which led to an active gas leak.

As a precaution, Waupun Fire Department Crews evacuated all buildings on the north side of the 300 block of the East Main Street. The East Main Street and the North Madison Street were also temporarily closed.

Alliant Energy's crews checked the gas leak within 30 minutes.

The fire brigade staff then worked with Alliant Energy employees to inspect the affected buildings and to ensure that they were safe to re-enter.

At 11:15 p.m. all evacuated were allowed to return to their apartments and shops.

A total of 20 people were evacuated and 20 real estate had disorders from Gasservice, the fire brigade said.

Alliant Energy should be on site on Saturday morning to continue repairs and work with real estate owners to work on the reinforcement of pilot lights.

No injuries were reported.
