Why does the date of Easter change every year?

In contrast to Christmas, which is set on December 25th, Easter follows a movable calendar based on the lunar cycle. The date is determined by a formula that the Nicaea Council set in 325 AD.

Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox (March 20). This means that Easter can be observed anywhere between March 22nd and April 25th.

The Orthodox Church usually celebrates Easter at a different time due to the use of the Julian calendar, but in 2025 both calendars are aligned.
