Why BYU Football will only wear 3 quarterbacks on the list this spring this spring

Provo -Jake Retzlaff met after the first day of spring practice on Thursday afternoon with the ByU Quarterback group, which would normally require a small council room.

Instead, it was only Retzlaff, the Redshirt Senior Starter of the 11-2 campaign of the past year, which culminated with a national No. 13 ranking, with the former Skyridge High Star and the Utah State Transfer McCae Hillstead and Western Michigan Transfer Treyson Bouruet Transfer.

Due to the likely impending settlement of House against NCAA, which opens the door for the income from universities with college athlete, the Cougars squad – like most in the country – is about to cut off to 105 players.

This means that the team is concerned with significant cuts, including the quarterback room, which Retzlaff described as incredibly close mesh.

“Just because there are three of us, it is already the closest room where I was a part,” said Retzlaff, who threw for 2,947 yards and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions on the way to an 11: 2 season. “I love these two guys to death; they are great.”

The former Baylor Transfer Gerry Bohanon has a degree from last year's group of signal callers to pursue a professional career. Noah Lugo moved to Utsa, closer to home for the native Haslet, Texas; And the former Corner Canyon star Cole Hagen left the team, but stayed at the BYU school to graduate.

These cuts are hundreds of college football, including dozens of the Cougars changing room, as the programs are trying to get to the impending player period until the first game of the season.

Head coach Kalani Sitake joked that byu was not “somewhere near” the 105 player limit. But you only have to be there at the start of the season on August 30th against Portland State.

“For us it is only honest with everyone we have in all positions,” said Sitake, whose initial spring squad lists 113 players. “There are people who definitely belong here, but the squad limit is not something that we have come up with.

“Our task was to arrange our team to be 123 strong and deep, and we have arrived there. Now we have to cut it off; but that's the rule, and we will follow at will. It will not be precise science, but we will do our best to get the right boys on the field.”

Byu quarters from left, Treyson Bouruet (10), Jake Retzlaff (12) and Gerry Bohanon (3) speak when they after the opening day of the BYU football -Spring -Spring on the Zion Bank -exercise field of the student athletes on the campus of Brigham Young University on Thursday, February 27th, February, February, on February 27, February 27.

The former BOONTIFUL HIGH Quarterback Emerson Geilman will take part in the program in autumn after the 6-foot 4, 201-pound region 5 MVP, which led the Redhawks to their first state title since 2003, and register at the BYU.

Until then, Sitake and offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick have to make a decision. Retzlaff is the undisputed starter, but his main security does not yet have to be determined.

Will it be the 5-foot 10 Hillstead that led Skyridge High to a state championship title before playing 59% of his passports for 1,062 yards and 11 touchdowns with eight interceptions in eight games in the state of Utah in 2023?

Or maybe Bourguet, The Tucson, Arizona, born in 10 games in West Michigan in 2022-23 in 10 games for 1,314 yards and six touchdowns?

“One of my favorite parts of spring ball will be that these two fight it,” said Retzlaff. “They are two really good football players, two really clever boys, and both process it a little differently.

“These boys are great. I can't say enough about these boys.”

As far as the quarterback discussion is concerned with a few more empty chairs, Retzlaff added that some of them could have been filled on the exercise field on Thursday – in the spirit, ie.

“McCae was in 3rd place,” he said of one of several Jersey swaps, “and today he pulled a ball in the practice where we called him 'McCae Bohanon'.

“We miss Gerry and I will definitely call him a call about it. But we love this room.”
