With a view of Floridas Peak Mamey Sapote season forward

While there is already a certain availability of the tropical fruit makey sapota on the market, more intensive harvesting begins next month. “We only harvest at the end of March. Then we really know that they are ready,” says Frank Martinez from AR Produce.

The supply of the fruits comes from Florida and the harvest looks similar to last year. “Mamey is a fruit that cannot be imported from any country – it is one of the few objects produced in Florida that are not endangered by imports,” he says.

The state produces two main varieties of Mamey -Magaña and Key West. “Ten to 15 years ago, the Magañas started in April to May, and now they harvest in January,” he says. “I don't like this type of program because a good percentage of the fruits harvested in January and February is not yet ready.” The fruits are also more expensive at that time, although not always fully ripe and consumed.

Marching
The AR Producs producers begin with the Magañas harvest in March and that goes between May and June. Then it changes to harvest the Key West variety of Mamey depending on the volume for a month or two.

It is always strong for Mamey for demand. “The big difference between these two varieties is the size. Magañas, which weigh £ 3-7. What is huge are not the retailers. Some don't want to start with this variety and wait for Key West because it is a small to medium-sized Obst is-5-2 pound per unit, “says Martinez. With prices between $ 2 and $ 3. This makes the prices for the fruits strong.

In the meantime, he expects pricing to look like last year. “Last year there was a very decent price and we saw no drop in prices and we expect that this year will be the same,” says Martinez.
