Young arrests in the Caddo Parish have been trenders since 2023

(Center Square) – The latest crime statistics show an increase in youth arrest since 2023 in the Caddo community.

Records of the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office showed that 40 arrests took place by February 21. In this report, 222 young people were found, which were arrested in 2023 and 269 in 2024.

In a recent meeting of the Caddo Parish Commission, the municipal administrator Erica Bryant shared the recent youth numbers with 25 detention, five in the youthful judiciary office, 27 with the boss Court Counselor and 452 on probation.

Apart from the increase in arrests since 2023, the figures that Bryant shared in the working session on February 18 show an increase since the meeting on February 4, when it was only 17, five in the office of youthful judiciary and 24 with the boss Court Counselor.

There was a decline in young people in the probation, with 458 being reported on February 4, and now there are 452.

Commissioner John-Paul Young expressed concerns about capacity when another youth is arrested.

“What is our plan if another child is arrested and 24 beds are full?” Asked Young.

The Caddo Parish Juvenile Justice Center only has 24 beds.

According to Bryant, there will be a process to assess who can be released if other young people are used in the facility, and the numbers in the facility were no longer a little in the 17-year-old.

According to a recently adopted Louisiana law last year, the age for attempting young people as adults from 18 to 17.

If the revision is adopted, courts can decide which crimes of the crimes committed under the age of 17 can be brought to court as adults.

The struggle for minimizing youth crimes in the Caddo Parish is still a priority over the past December, James Stewart, District Prosecutor of Caddo, to keep young people away from prison.

“I see too many children that we brought into prison in the youth prison years ago, and now they are 18, 19 and still insulted,” said the deputy district attorney Wilbert Pryor in a statement to TV Station KSLA.

Among other things, the municipality offers presentations for the prevention of youth prevention that are rich from weapon crimes, cyberbullying, sexual assault and others. The program aims to teach and educate young people in the Caddo Parish area in order to remain safe and make good decisions.
